Medical treatment for acne
If you visit your doctor for help to control your acne he will probably attempt a few treatment before referring you on to a dermatologist. (a DR who specializes in the skin) Here are some of the things they may suggest you try by way of treatment. Always ask about the side effects and consider these before deciding if you want to try them. These are some of the more popular treatment that they may offer. Topical (externally applied) Antibiotics and Antibacterial: These include erythromycin, clindamycin, sulfacetamide, and azelaic acid. Retinoids: Retin-A has been around for years, and has become milder and gentler while still maintaining its effectiveness. Other retinoids include Differin and Avita. These are helpful for unclogging pores. This may cause reddening and peeling as well as irritation of the skin. Most doctors start oral treatment with tetracycline or one of the related "cyclines", such as doxycycline and minocycline. Other antibiotics that are useful for treating acne are cefadroxil, amoxicillin, and sulfa drugs. These can make you feel queasy, cause digestive disturbance, turn your teeth yellow and even cause breathing difficulties. Oral contraceptives: Modern contraceptives, which are low in estrogen to promote safety, have little effect on acne one way or the other. One pill, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, has been shown to help acne, but its effectiveness is only modest. Stronger Anti-androgens that block male hormones can be effective, but are not with out potential side effects. Accutane. Accutane has been said to be very effective against the most stubborn of acne cases. However this treatment is not one you should consider lightly. Read below what the FDA's finding on this drug were in recent tests. Depression and Suicide Linked to Accutane In addition to causing birth defects, Accutane has been linked to depression and suicide. From 1982 through August 2004, the FDA received 4,992 reports of psychiatric problems associated with Accutane and isotretinoin use (Alert for Health Care Professionals, FDA, August 12, 2005). One hundred ninety Accutane patients committed suicide through January 2005. The FDA says that this number may actually be larger due to underreporting. It has updated the Accutane label to warn doctors to look for symptoms of depression in their patients, including sad mood, irritability, anger, loss of interest in social or sports activities, disturbed sleep patterns, changes in appetite, and trouble concentrating (Isotretinoin or Accutane Capsule Information, FDA, August 12, 2005). Please insure that you discuss, and consider any potential medical acne treatments before embarking on them. They do not come with out potential side effects!Do acne cures work?
